Ludwig van Beethoven: Diabelli-Variationen; Jeajoon Ryu: Suite for Piano; Won-Sook Hur, Klavier; 1 CD Dux 1312; Aufnahme 07/2016, Veröffentlichung 08/2017 (77’29) - Rezension von Alain Steffen

Won-Sook Hur makes a positive impression in this recording. She is a very good player and allows the music to unfold in a truthful manner.

Ludwig van Beethoven: Diabelli Variations; Jeajoon Ryu: Suite for Piano; Won-Sook Hur, piano; 1 CD Dux 1312; Recording 07/2016, Publication 08/2017 (77'29) - Review by Alain Steffen

Ludwig van Beethoven's Diabelli Variations, at least on recordings, are becoming increasingly popular with pianists. Although there were high-profile artists such as Arrau, Backhaus, Brendel and Gulda, who recorded this work, it is relatively rare to hear it in the concert hall. Reason enough for almost every record company to send their own pianists into the race with this work. So it is with the Polish company Dux, the Korean pianist Won-Sook Hur, who takes on the Diabelli variations. Hur's interpretation is impeccable, but the pianist does not manage to break away from the mainstream or really stand up to the legendary recordings. Everything is correct and beautiful, playing technically at the highest level.
The attached 'Suite for Piano' from 2013 by the South Korean composer Jeajoon Ryu (1970) is an interesting piece that draws on Renaissance and Baroque elements and processes them in a contemporary way. Won-Sook Hur turns out to be a sensitive interpreter who draws clean lines and gives the suite the utmost transparency.

Won-Sook Hur makes a positive impression in this recording. She is a very good player and allows the music to unfold in a truthful manner.
